Now, despite the seeming tension between your love for travel and the dwindling economy, or whatever else may be stopping you from taking that vacation, you need this guide on your bucket list. Before we share these tips, please note that solo-travelling is not an interest one picks up simply out of lack of buddies to travel with. For some, life is much more fun to explore alone. The thrill of seeing the world on your own terms is unmatched for these travellers, and we get it!

Remember you will be travelling by yourself. You don’t want to be lugging those large suitcases and asking strangers for help. To do this, practice carrying your suitcase(s) around after you pack. If it is too heavy then, it will be even heavier on travel day. Don’t do it.

This means that it is not enough that you read a fancy travel guide (like this one!). Find people who have been to your destination and ask them questions. You want to find out the best and safest accommodation options, recommendations for places to visit (preferably free), and an array of things to do (especially if you enjoy taking risks). Go armed with both the information you need and the ones you think you don’t need.

Tip 3: Share all your details with someone you trust

This is not the time to be mysterious about your whereabouts. Someone you trust back home needs to be in the know! Please share details about your itinerary with them and keep them updated wherever you go, for security reasons.

Tip 4: Walk around with confidence, even if you are faking it

If you live in a metropolis like Lagos, Nigeria, then you already know why this advice is important. Wherever you go during your trip, go with the confidence of a person who has been there before. A tip to help with this is having your google map turned on always. You can wear an earbud/airpod to hear the instructions as you go, but do not wear a full headset and drown out your surroundings. Stay alert, composed, and confident.

Tip 5: Be friendly, but don’t lose guard

To be an excellent solo-traveller, you must be open to meeting new people. Be friendly and warm because you never know who you might meet, but keep your boundaries. What this means is that you can enjoy a drink and chat with a stranger in a public place, but this does not mean that you should invite them to your hotel/hostel.

Most importantly, if you spend too long day-dreaming about the places on your bucket list, you just might never go. Don’t cross the line between planning and over-planning. Just book a trip on
